Life Education - children helped with life style education
Local children attending primary schools around the Winfrith and Harwell sites are benefiting from Life Education thanks to RSRL which has donated money to support the Life Bus visits to local schools.

Winfrith Optimised Programme
The NDA has given approval for optimising the Winfrith programme by spending money on decommissioning rather than on care and maintenance. The Programme Office, working with the relevant project managers, has recently completed incorporating the Winfrith Optimised Programme into the RSRL Life Time Plan (also known as the Baseline). The programme is based around the three main facilities at Winfrith that need to be decommissioned.

Last Whessoe tank down
Enter A key element of the Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant (LETP) project is the decommissioning of redundant legacy assets previously used as part of active operations. The primary objective for 2012/2013 was the removal of the Whessoe tanks from the LETP. This work is an enabler to the closure of the LETP and subsequent delicensing and de designation of the site.

New Waste Store at Harwell
Oxfordshire County Council has approved RSRL’s application for an Intermediate Level Waste store at Harwell.

RSRL support children in their communications
RSRL recently sponsored Chilton Primary School in Oxfordshire and Lulworth and Winfrith Primary School in Dorset by donating money to purchase a MP3 digital audio resource known as “StoryPhones”. Designed for use in primary schools, the wireless headsets give children a new way of listening to audio resources; to help develop their language, communication, listening, literacy and social skills. The learning tool which can be used indoors and outdoors allows children to listen to pre-recorded stories, sing along to songs, join in listening games as well as learn a new language - they can even record their own stories to share!

Demolition of Building 552
In late February 2013 Harwell’s building 552 was demolished, with the exception of works that are progressing to remove the base slab during March. Constructed for the Materials Development Division during the early 1960's, the building consisted of an office block and a laboratory suite that was later extended.

LETP decommissioning
The second phase in the removal of the eight large metal (Whessoe) tanks at Harwell’s Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant is well underway. During February three tanks were reduced in size and packaged by principal contractor KDC.

Harwell campus organisations tour the licensed site
Members of the Science Technology Facility Council (STFC) and Diamond Light Source visited Harwell in January as part of the programme ‘Other People’s Business’. The programme run by the STFC helps participating organisations satisfy their curiosity about other parts of organisations on the Harwell Site. The day began with a guided tour of the licensed site, followed by a visit to DIDO, a redundant material testing reactor waiting final stage decommissioning.
