Pioneers celebrate with BEPO
One of Harwell’s most distinguished ‘residents’ turned sixty this year. The research reactor BEPO – the British Experimental Pile – started up its first nuclear chain reaction in 1948 and was operational until 1968. BEPO was the first large reactor in Europe and the UK’s second reactor. At one time, it was one of Europe’s main suppliers of medical isotopes.

UK and Ukraine International Collaboration on Radiological Security
Sixteen delegates representing Ukraine’s RADON enterprises for Radioactive Waste Storage, the Ministries of Emergencies and Health, and the State Nuclear Regulatory Committee visited UKAEA’s Harwell site on Friday 14 November.

Stephen Henwood (Chairman of the NDA) visit to Winfrith
The new chairman of the NDA Stephen Henwood recently visited Winfrith. He was shown a number of presentations on the decommissioning work carried out to date, before being given a tour of the site and a visit to the SGHWR. Brian Burnett the NDA Programme Director for Harwell/Winfrith was also present.

Visit to Winfrith by the JAEA
On the 30th July the JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Authority) visited Winfrith, a visit requested by the NDA. The visit concentrated on decommissioning achievements to date in particular that of SGHWR, it also gave an opportunity to exchange information.

Charities benefit from UKAEA staff survey
Following a recent staff survey that was issued to employees within the UKAEA group, donations totalling £1,204 were made to selected charities.

DRAGON goes into long-term Care & Maintenance
It has recently been announced that DRAGON will be put into long term care and maintenance until decommissioning funding becomes available. This is currently estimated at 2023.

Helping the Environment Agency
Harwell is helping the Environment Agency, the public body that protects and improves the environment in England and Wales, with the safe processing and storage of radioactive sources recovered from users throughout the UK. The sealed sources were used in hospitals and industry.
