DRAGON Reactor Project Milestones

A significant amount of progress has been made on the Dragon project at RSRL Winfrith. The project began with the removal of the fuel storage roundabout, locally known as the Carousel. The Carousel was an area where the fuel taken from the reactor core was allowed to cool down before being transferred to the fuel store. It was the first time that operatives had seen the Carousel and its associated structure since 1963. The greatest challenge was to carefully dismantle the carousel in reverse and pass the components through an opening of only 1.5m by 2m. A total of 20 tonnes of metal was removed from the carousel area and it is expected that all of this be released and recycled.
