UKAEA Winfrith site end state exhibition

February 6, 2007

An exhibition will be presented to the local community in early February about various proposals for the end state of the site. This exhibition is part of a consultation about the condition and the state of land at UKAEA-Winfrith following decommissioning. It will give the local community a chance to have their say in how they consider the land should be left at the end of decommissioning.

The initial findings have been produced by the Winfrith Stakeholder Sub Group and after the public have had their chance to express their views, a report will be written and submitted to the NDA.

The dates are:

Thursday 8th Feb (1400 – 1900 hrs)
Winfrith Village Hall

Tuesday 13th Feb (1400 – 1900 hrs)
Wool – D’Urberville

Thursday 15th Feb (1400 – 1900 hrs)
East Burton Village Hall

Note to Editors:

  • The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a world-leader in managing nuclear decommissioning and environmental restoration.
  • UKAEA has announced the accelerated decommissioning of the Winfrith Site, bringing forward the timescale for complete decommissioning, so that the site can be cleared by 2018, 30 years earlier than previously planned. Since April 2005, this work has been carried out under contract to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
  • Winfrith continues to advance towards further delicensing and disposal for unrestricted use. The western end of the site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its natural flora and fauna and will not be developed. It is managed on behalf of UKAEA by Johnson Controls.
  • During the next decade, nearly all the site buildings containing radioactive facilities will be decontaminated and demolished or remodelled for commercial purposes.
  • The mission of the UKAEA is to restore the environment of its sites in a way which is:
  • Safe and secure
  • Environmentally responsible
  • Value for money
  • Publicly acceptable
