UKAEA helps support Harwell Church Tower Appeal

July 30, 2007

St Matthew’s Church is a Grade 1 listed building dating from 1190 and sits in the small community village of Harwell in the South Oxfordshire countryside. The main tower constructed around 1200 survives today only because of the care that it has been given by the Harwell community over the centuries. From the top of the tower, on a clear day, you can see in the distance the spires of the City of Oxford.

With the recent weather conditions there is a further emphasis on ensuring the tower is fully weathertight. The church architects have put together a detailed survey of works to repair the roof, wooden louvres windows and repairs to the stonework where it has weathered or been damaged.

The work is estimated to cost around £60,000 and the local community is continually fundraising to raise the money needed and welcomed UKAEA’s contribution on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority towards this project.

Now that the necessary permissions have been granted, the work now can start with estimated completion later this year.
