Helping the Environment Agency
April 4, 2008
Harwell is helping the Environment Agency, the public body that protects and improves the environment in England and Wales, with the safe processing and storage of radioactive sources recovered from users throughout the UK. The sealed sources were used in hospitals and industry.
Under the ongoing programme, over the next year about 1,700 sources will be sent for processing in Harwell’s Solid Waste Complex, B462 and Active Waste Handling Plant, B459. This represents about 50 shipments and a total volume of approximately 500 litres of waste.
Sources are shipped to Harwell in approved, shielded containers, processed in shielded cell lines and then repackaged in waste containers. Most will later be transferred to Windscale for interim storage, ready for eventual disposal in a national repository.
