First Active Waste can recovered with Retrieval Machine 2
August 22, 2008
Eddy Russell and Kevin Law (462.27 Operations) complete the recovery of the first active can using Retrieval Machine 2 (RM2)
The RM2 commissioning team in B462 recovered the first waste can from the RH-ILW store in 462.9 on 20th August. The can was recovered as the first part of extended active scintillation tests under the watchful eye of Richard Lightowlers, the RM2 senior project manager. Richard explained that a number of stainless steel cans in good condition will be recovered to demonstrate the adequacy of the shielding interface between the machine and the floor. This particular can is significant because it is the first waste can to be recovered using RM2. Operations manager, Stuart Watson added that the team are set to use RM2 to safely recover the remaining 6600 cans in the store over the next 10 years.
John Almon (Director of Waste & Technical Services) commented "This accomplishment is the result of many years of hard work from many different people, particularly those in the UKAEA projects and operations teams as well as those of the design and build contractor Assystem UK Ltd. I am very pleased with what has been done and all those that have contributed should be proud of what they have achieved."
