UK and Ukraine International Collaboration on Radiological Security
November 20, 2008
Sixteen delegates representing Ukraine’s RADON enterprises for Radioactive Waste Storage, the Ministries of Emergencies and Health, and the State Nuclear Regulatory Committee visited UKAEA’s Harwell site on Friday 14 November.
The delegates are visiting the UK for training as part of a project funded by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change which is assisting the Ukraine Government with the design of a centralised store for highly active spent radioactive sources to be sited within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
Earlier in the week, the delegates received training at the Crown Agents International Training Centre, in Worthing, on the key principles of international project management and procurement. During the visit to UKAEA Harwell site they were given first hand experience of how radioactive waste is handled in the UK and an opportunity to exchange views with British experts.

Notes for Editors
UK and Ukraine are collaborating closely on radiological safety and security. In particular they are working together to improve the co-ordination of international efforts to provide long-term storage for highly-active spent radiological sources in Ukraine itself.
Crown Agents, the international development company, provides training at its UK training centre and internationally. It also arranges global study tours for clients in disciplines in which it is itself a practitioner.
