NDA Chairman Visits Harwell
January 23, 2009
Stephen Henwood was at Harwell for a familiarisation visit on 20 January. After a welcome and overview from Alan Neal and his management team, the NDA Chairman visited two facilities.
At the solid waste facility, operations manager Stuart Watson outlined the remote handled ILW recovery and processing arrangements. Having donned suitable PPE, Stephen Henwood entered a radiologically designated area to observe part of the commissioning of the retrieval machine, RM2, as it was stripped down and moved to the next array. During his visit, he chatted with Gary Foster, head end cell operator and Derek Tyrrell, shift manager, about the work of the facility.
At his next stop in B459, Gary Reid showed the NDA visitor the cell line where National Disposal Service (NDS) sources were being volume reduced.
After the visit, Alan Neal commented that it had gone very well and “in particular, the facility teams made a very positive impression on the NDA Chairman”.
