Company Launch - Research Sites Restoration Limited
February 2, 2009
On 2nd February 2009 two former civil nuclear research sites, Harwell in Oxfordshire and Winfrith in Dorset, will combine to become one company, Research Sites Restoration Limited (RSRL).
Once the headquarters of the UK civil nuclear research programme, Harwell is being decommissioned and reborn as part of a successful science and innovation campus employing over 4,000 people. Its sister site at Winfrith has already completed a major part of its clean up programme and has developed the Winfrith Technology Centre to ensure continuing employment prospects in that part of Dorset.
Prior to February 2nd the sites’ decommissioning programmes were delivered by the Harwell and Winfrith division of the UK Atomic Energy Authority under the terms of contract with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
UKAEA has been restructured so that the management of the decommissioning of its former research sites can be put out to competition by the NDA. Pending competition for ownership of RSRL, the new company will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of UKAEA.
RSRL Managing Director, Alan Neal commented, “Forming RSRL has been a major project that required us to formally demonstrate, over a period of several months, that the two sites will remain safe and secure following the reorganisation. I am very proud of the hard work and professionalism of my team that has allowed us to achieve this. I am now delighted to lead a company that will bring innovative solutions to the restoration of the two sites on behalf of our customer, the NDA”.
