LETP cleans up

April 21, 2009

The programme of work to reduce the waste at Harwell's Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant (LETP) continues with over 150 drums of legacy contaminated sludge being cemented ready for disposal as solid low level waste.

Work also continues to reduce the volume of effluent collected at the LETP, through rationalising inputs into the drains and the decommissioning of large sections of the drainage system.

The volume of liquid waste processed was reduced to 9,000 cubic metres, compared to over half a million in the LETP's heyday. Further diversionary and decommissioning work planned for the coming year will reduce this volume to below 2,000 cubic metres.

Plant manager Gareth Thomas commented, "The team's achievements over the last 12 months are an important step forward in our goal to cease operations at the LETP and to progress to decommissioning the plant."
