RSRL Celebrates World Environment Day

June 5, 2009

Friday the 5th of June was World Environment Day, organised by the UN in order to stimulate action to protect the Environment. The theme this year was Your Planet Needs YOU! – Unite to combat climate change.’ To celebrate the Day, RSRL held a range of activities across both of its sites.

At Winfrith, Environmental Information Points providing information on climate change, energy efficiency, local wildlife and energy consumption were available for staff to view throughout the day in both D60 and B71. The event was attended by Kathleen Stevenson, Director of Safety and Environment, who commented that ‘climate change is increasingly being recognised as a major issue. RSRL will be seeking improvements in its carbon footprint wherever that is practicable’.

At Harwell, an Environmental Roadshow was held in the foyer of B220 and was well attended. Both the Energy Saving Trust and the Harwell Bicycle Users Group (Harbug) were in attendance to provide information and advice, in addition to the RSRL stands on the wildlife and consumption of energy on the Harwell site. A series of shorts films, including Fragile Planet by Sting, were shown in the Large Conference room, in order to help employees understand the reasons behind why we need to reduce our carbon footprint.
