Shadow Energy Minister visits the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus

June 25, 2009

Charles Hendry, the Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change visited the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus today to see the progress being made in the decommissioning of redundant nuclear facilities under license to Research Sites Restoration Limited (RSRL).

RSRL, who operates under contract to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, is responsible for the closure programme at Harwell and its sister site Winfrith in Dorset.

As well as touring the site Mr Hendry visited Dido, one of two remaining materials testing reactors.

Managing Director of RSRL, Alan Neal said “this was a welcome opportunity to show some of the first rate decommissioning work achieved at Harwell and discuss our aspirations for the progressive restoration of the site”

Charles Hendry was also given a presentation on the HiPER project by Professor Mike Dunne of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, one of the Campus organisations. HiPER is a proposed European High Power laser Energy Research facility dedicated to demonstrating the feasibility of laser driven fusion as a future energy source.

Mr Hendry commented “I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to visit Harwell. The work being done here is world-leading and shows the genius of British scientists tackling not only the decommissioning challenges we face but also those in energy shortages. The job of Government is to help build on that success in the years to come”.
