Safety Director visits Harwell
September 8, 2009
Alan Rae, Safety Director of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) attended Harwell on the 8th September 2009 for a familiarisation visit on the key hazard reduction projects.
The visit comprised of a plant tour in the solid waste facility B462 where Project Manager, Gary Preston showed Alan the stored Sea Disposal Drums and the Remote Handled Waste Recovery and Processing Facility Operations, including both Retrieval Machines 1 and 2. At the next stop Alec Inns introduced Gary Reid, recently appointed B220 ATO Holder, and Richard Jenkins, ILW Project Manager, who gave an overview of B220.29 facility's operations and waste processing.
The tour was completed with a visit to the Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant (LETP) where Alec Inns, LETP Facility Manager, gave an up-date on the programme of works continuing at the LETP on the reduction of legacy contaminated waste. During this visit, Alan chatted with Tom Hodgson, Encapsulation Plan Manager and Steve Fisher B336.31 Building Supervisor about the ongoing work to immobilise active effluent sludges that have arisen from previous operations at the LETP.
After the visit, Kathleen Stevenson, RSRL Director of Safety and Environment commented that Alan Rae found the visit very useful and appreciated the opportunity to see at first hand some of the operational programmes and to see some of the issues that we are over coming. Part of the benefit in seeing the operational work was that it showed the complexities of projects that didn't come through in other ways.
