RSRL gets a great reaction

October 20, 2009

In October 40 staff from the Science Technology and Facilities Council (STFC) and Diamond Light Source jumped at the change to see ‘behind the wire’ as part of the programme ‘Other People’s Business’. The programme, which started in 2006, and is run by the STFC helps staff in RSRL, STFC and Diamond satisfy their curiosity about other parts of organisations on the Harwell Site.

The tour began with a comprehensive guided tour of the secure site, describing the research that has taken place in different buildings and highlighting some of the challenges facing RSRL before the land can be redeveloped as part of the Campus. Afterwards the visitors were given the opportunity to visit the research reactor Dido, where they received an insight and presentation into the world of reactors and the work undertaken at Harwell in the build up of civil nuclear energy.

Mike Curtis-Rouse from the STFC Micro and Nanotechnology Centre commented “I like many others have never been inside ‘the wire’ and it was fascinating to see the nuclear heritage of Harwell. The highlight of the tour was a unique opportunity to see inside the Dido reactor”.

Nick Webb who works in ISIS, the STFC’s pulsed neutron source, summed up the thoughts of many in the group “it’s the first time that I have found out anything about what really happens on the other side of the fence. Many thanks to everyone who helped with this event – it was a great example of campus organisations working together and hopefully the start of many more reciprocal visits”.
