The National Operating Experience and Learning Group (OELG)

March 29, 2010

RSRL Harwell recently hosted a two day meeting of The National Operating Experience and Learning Group (OELG). It is the first time that the recently formed OEFL Team have met with the OELG which, amongst others include all the SLC’s, MOD, AWE, Royal Navy, NDA and Urenco. The OELG meet on a quarterly basis to establish contact and exchange Learn experiences.

The group were among the first to see Harwell’s new excavation service detection technology, EZiDig, put through its paces in a live demonstration in the field. RSRL is the first nuclear Site Licence Company (SLC) in the UK to adopt new excavation service detection technology, set to transform the safety of projects where digging near underground services is required.

The group also visited B229.29, Harwell’s remote handling facility, where Richard Jenkins - ILW Project Manager and his team gave an overview of the facility's operations and waste processing. The tour completed with a visit to Dido, a redundant material testing reactor, where Ed Abel and his team gave an interesting insight into the world of reactors and the work undertaken at Harwell in the build up of civil nuclear energy.

OELG representatives commented “on behalf of the OELG group we'd like to thank Lesley Blowfield and Carl Ponder, and all those involved in making our first visit to Harwell a very interesting and informative experience”.

Everyone involved from the OELG expressed their interest and thanks for the tours of B443, B220.29 and the Ezi-Dig & Ezi-Reel demonstration. They also found the site history and future programme of great interest.
