Winfrith Project News

April 20, 2010

SGHWR and DRAGON The SGHWR and Dragon team have successfully completed two projects under the NDA’s portfolio management scheme during the reporting period. The first was the decommissioning of 597 fission chambers which were degassed in the Dragon complex. The second project was the decommissioning of the 12 Dragon reactor tanks, all of which were successfully size reduced and passed through the Winfrith Abrasive Cleaning Machine unit.

WETP A significant milestone has been reached with sludge encapsulation operations in WETP now complete. A total of 1068 drums have been produced over the lifetime of the plant. Final flushing of pipework has been undertaken and WETP will now move into post operational clean-out (POCO) prior to final decommissioning and demolition. Encapsulation of sandy material for disposal as LLW is continuing in EAST with over 60 drums produced to date. Once completed access to the sludge tanks will be created to allow man entry for final decommissioning to proceed.
