Euratom visit Harwell
August 5, 2010
In December 2009 RSRL received a request from the European Commission's Directorate General for Energy (Euratom) to host a joint Euratom/ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) training course at Harwell. This followed on from a very successful course for new Euratom inspectors hosted at Harwell in October 2008. Support for this initiative was given by RSRL directors, the NDA, and by the HSE's UK Safeguards Office.
Euratom and IAEA conduct joint inspections throughout the European Union, and the objective of this course was to give delegates training in team work and communication in a real operational environment, but under closely managed and supervised conditions.
As with the previous training exercise, RSRL's B462 Drum Store, and a tenant facility, Canberra Ltd., were identified as being particularly suitable for the practical elements of
the training course.
The training course was held from June 1st to June 3rd and once again proved to be a great success. In a subsequent letter Mats Olsson, Euratom’s training officer wrote: ‘I am very pleased to inform you that the delegates from both the IAEA and EURATOM found the course to be both interesting and valuable for their work as Safeguards Inspectors. The opportunity to work practically on improving team-work and communication in your facility was very welcome.’
