Replacement Effluent Treatment Plant (RETP)

November 17, 2010

In preparation for the installation of the Replacement Effluent Treatment Plant (RETP) in building 462.3, the B462 delay system has had to be partially decommissioned. Sections of the old plant will have to be removed to allow the installation of the new plant.

Work started in March 2010 and is currently ahead of schedule. The upper bunds have been decontaminated and painted and work has started on the deep sump (shown in the picture). Significant quantities of redundant pipework and electrical equipment have been removed and packaged as low level waste.

Widespread high levels of Alpha and Beta contamination were encountered. The contamination is being successfully removed from the concrete walls using brick acid. This novel technique is proving quick and effective with a very low risk of producing any airborne contamination.

A temporary tank and pumping system (on the right of the picture) has been installed and is in operation. The removal of the old receipt tanks (bottom centre) is now in progress to permit the installation of the new plant.
