Knowledge management using IMAGES

January 7, 2011

Site decommissioning and restoration works at both RSRL sites require knowledge of both current and past activities. For the past 10 years the Harwell and Winfrith sites have used the IMAGES (Information Management and Geographical Evaluation System) tool to both plan site decommissioning and remediation works, and to manage the large volumes of environmental surveying and sampling data produced. Data held in IMAGES includes historical building information as well as soil, water and radiation survey data. This environmental data are linked to mapping software, which enables both effective presentation to stakeholders and more detailed technical assessments to be conducted.

Having an effective data management tool allowing RSRL to manage often complex environmental datasets and associated relevant ‘data quality’ information, will mean the data will remain accessible to future stakeholders.

To raise the profile of RSRL’s work, Angela Bartlett (RSRL Harwell) and Gavin Coppins (IMAGES support contractor from Babcock) compiled a paper entitled 'Optimising Site Investigation Strategies Using Information Management' which was accepted for presentation at the 11th International Conference on Management of Soil, Groundwater and Sediments (ConSoil 2010). The aim of the paper was to illustrate the way RSRL is being proactive in planning site restoration works and taking ownership of project technical data.

The paper was well received and RSRL has been invited by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to participate in a live webinar in the New Year to further share our experiences. Angela commented that "The value of good quality information produced at the end of often complex and costly decommissioning and remediation projects should not be underestimated."
