B462.3 Delay Tank - work in progress

June 15, 2011

Part of B462.3 (the Delay Tank building for Harwell's B462 solid waste plant) is being cleared of plant and decontaminated in preparation for installation of the site's new liquid effluent treatment plant, known as RETP.

A major element of this work has just been completed: the clean-up of the deep sump where the major components of the new plant will be located. The tanks in the sump contained radioactive sludges and the walls and floor of the sump were heavily contaminated.

The work has been complicated by the need to maintain a liquid effluent discharge route from B462 through the building while the work is in progress. The photographs show the deep sump before work started and with the work nearing completion.

Two further elements of the preparatory work are progressing, these are the emptying and decontamination of a smaller neighbouring sump and the clean out and painting of two large discharge tanks.

The installation of the new plant is due to begin in November 2011.
