Demolition programme continues
August 12, 2011
The transformation of the Harwell site is continuing with the demolition of three more well known buildings.
The Cockcroft Hall, one of many Harwell buildings constructed in the 1950’s was used as a lecture theatre and reception for important visitors to the campus. As demand for lecture facilities of this nature has been in steady decline for many years the decision was taken to demolish the building some years ago to pave the way for redevelopment of the campus.
B455, known to many staff as Harwell’s Education and Training Centre was a 1960's purpose built timber structure built for the AERE Reactor School as a replacement for existing facilities on site. During its service it provided facilities for lectures, laboratory and experimental work and by 1970 provided courses for people from outside of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. Before the building was declared redundant in the late 2000’s it was home to the Ridgeway Café.
B147 was originally constructed during the 1930’s to serve as Airman Pilots Quarters for RAF Harwell. During the 1990’s and early 2000’s the building was used by various tenants until it was no longer needed.
