RSRL hosts Nuclear Waste Research Forum (NWRF)

October 7, 2011

On 5th and 6th October RSRL hosted the latest Nuclear Waste Research Forum (NWRF) which was attended by over 20 visitors from across the nuclear industry including waste producers, regulators, NDA and Site Licence Companies.

The NWRF encourages technology collaboration across the nuclear industry along with aiding strategic coordination of research and technology development as identified in SLC TBuRDs (Technical Baseline & Underpinning Research and Development) documents. The forum aims to get best value by ensuring that, where possible, common needs, risks and opportunities are addressed collectively rather than on an individual SLC basis.

The meeting saw the return of former Harwell Director, Stan Gordelier to site, in his new role as Independent Chair of the NDA's Research Board.

The attendees visited the Head End Cells and Waste Encapsulation Plant in B462 followed by an informative presentation on the work at the Western Storage Area and Groundwater Treatment Plant. Other highlights included a presentation by Angela Bartlett on the use of IMAGES-GIS as a data management tool.

Hosting the NWRF was an excellent way to showcase what RSRL has achieved to date. The NWRF provides a good forum in which to collaborate on real issues with a view to finding real solutions.
