Members of the University of the Third Age (U3A) pay visit to Harwell
November 10, 2011
RSRL hosted a visit of the Faringdon & District U3A Science and Technology Group in November. The Group that is part of U3A, a nation-wide organisation that promotes the continued interest of retired people in culture, arts, sciences and a wide range of other activities, was given a presentation on the history of Harwell and Winfrith site as well as an overview of all the decommissioning achievements to date. This was followed by a tour of the Harwell site.
The group toured Harwell’s B220.29 remote handling wing and material testing reactor Dido, which is currently in a period of care and maintenance, to learn more about the decommissioning and radioactive waste management work being performed by RSRL.
Commenting on the visit, Leader, Dr Keith Thrower said: “we very much appreciated the warm welcome we were given and the time and effort that had gone into arranging the visit. It was a privilege to have the chance to look around a unique facility - most of us probably hadn’t fully appreciated the highly innovative and pioneering work that had been done at Harwell. The professionalism and dedication of RSRL in the formidable and challenging task of decommissioning Harwell was very apparent. Our sincere thanks go all those involved.”
