B392 Demolition

November 15, 2011

Harwell’s B392 has been demolished recently, with the exception of works that are progressing to remove the base slab by early December.

The building was constructed in 1951 to serve as a chemical engineering pilot plant with two extensions added during 1953; B392.3 used to undertake work on reactor technology and B392.4, a newer building containing a general laboratory, a chemical laboratory, a balance room and liquid metal chemistry laboratory.

Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s the building remained under the control of Chemical Engineering. During the 1980s a special experimental facility was erected at the rear of the building to undertake research into the flow of oil and gas from the north sea.

In 2004 the building was used by the Harwell Effluent Management Project (HEMP) and Amey Vectra decommissioning contractor. By 2006 the building was unoccupied and put into care and maintenance. Finally, in March 2011 the building was handed over to the Balance of Site Structures (BOSS) department for demolition.
