Emergency planning
Site emergency arrangements
RSRL is committed to upholding the highest safety standards at its sites at Harwell and Winfrith.
Though it is highly unlikely that an incident of any significance would occur at an RSRL site, plans are in place to deal with any emergencies.
Compliance:
RSRL’s emergency plans comply with the following regulations:
- Site licence to operate licence condition LC11, issued under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965 (as amended)
- Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999
- Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2001
Responsibilities:
In the event of an emergency, RSRL’s key responsibilities are to:
- rapidly assess the nature, severity and likely course of the incident
- take actions to limit or prevent escalation of the accident
- monitor the environment to assess the extent of any release of radioactive or hazardous material
- take any necessary action to protect site personnel, including employees, contractors, tenants and visitors
- rapidly provide information about the emergency to the public, the media and key external organisations
- provide advice and information to external organisations
- return the plant to a safe condition as quickly as possible
