Health and Safety

Safety

At all our sites, we apply rigorous health and safety standards to control hazards and limit risk to people or property.

The risks of our nuclear operations are rigorously assessed in the plant safety cases produced in line with nuclear industry safety case best practice requirements.

We ensure that our staff and contractors are suitably qualified, trained and experienced to work safely and meet all legal and regulatory requirements. Consistent procedures, clear lines of responsibility, communication and application of best practice are central to our approach.

The success of our safety management is shown by consistently low levels of safety events, employee accidents and radiation doses.

Health and safety is embedded in RSRL’s company management system. The RSRL management system meets the requirements of ISO 9001, BS OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001. It also reflects the principles of HSE document HSG65, "Successful Health and Safety Management" and IAEA document GS-R-3, "The Management System for Facilities and Activities". BS OHSAS 18001 is the nationally recognised standard for "Occupational Health & Safety management Systems".

BS OHSAS 18001

RSRL was recently audited against the OHSAS18001 Occupational Safety and Health Management System Standard and has been recommended for certification.

Occupational health

The health of our workforce is extremely important to us. We aim to provide our staff with a safe and healthy workplace.  We also implement stress management, smoking, alcohol and drug misuse policies to safeguard the welfare of our employees.
