Programme summary
Winfrith has now entered the final stage of decommissioning the site.
The plan is focused on progressive hazard reduction, the decommissioning of redundant facilities, the decommissioning of operational facilities once they are no longer required, the decommissioning of off-site facilities, and the close-out, delicensing and final de-designation of the site.
Key activities include
Hazard reduction
This includes the commissioning of suitable on-site storage facilities, and the safe relocation of hazardous materials to these facilities.
Decommissioning redundant facilities
The decommissioning of redundant facilities includes the progressive emptying of non-operational buildings to allow their decommissioning and demolition, and the removal of associated services.
Decommissioning operational facilities
Operation of Winfrith’s solid and liquid waste facilities will continue in support of reactor decommissioning. These facilities will be some of the last to be decommissioned.
Decommissioning off-site facilities
This includes facilities that are the responsibility of RSRL but are outside the site perimeter fence, such as the Blacknoll Reservoir and the sea-pipeline and associated facilities.
Site close-out and delicensing
This will address all the remaining issues related to the completion of the programme of works contracted through the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the removal of regulatory control.
